A multicultural immigration policy of Taiwan
Immigration seems to be making more headlines in recent years. As the world globalizes in terms of nations’ economies, trade and investment, borders are opened up more easily for “freer” flow of goods and products. People are supposedly freer to move around the world, too. Hence, it is a difficult issue to discuss the immigration policy of state. Some people think too much immigration is going to increase the unemployment rate and this is harmful to the local people. Some people think immigration could bring new knowledge and technology and this is beneficial to a country’s international trade. No matter you like or not, the fact is that lots of people migrate to Taiwan , especially foreign bride. Therefore, we have to face the issue and think how to deal with immigration affairs.
First, we all understand immigration can have positive and negative impacts on both the host (recipient) country, and the original country. For the benefits of immigration, I think immigrants can do jobs that people in the host country will not, or cannot do. Also, immigrants, when made to feel welcome in the host society, can contribute to the diversity of that society, which can help with tolerance and understanding. Moreover, immigrants offer an increased talent pool, if they have been well educated in their original country.
However, there are also numerous drawbacks of immigration. Most of people think immigrants can be exploited for their cheap labor. Furthermore, immigration can also attract criminal elements, from trafficking in drugs and people to other forms of crime and corruption. Additionally, immigration can become a social or political issue, where racism can be used to exploit feelings or as an excuse for current woes of local population.
Second, we have to demonstrate the value of human right of Taiwan . People emigrate from one country to another for a variety of complex reasons. Some are forced to move, due to conflict or to escape persecution and prejudices, while others may voluntarily emigrate. According to the International Law, every person has his/her own basic human rights. Also, the state has the responsibility to protect everyone’s human rights, even though he or she is foreigner. Therefore, we have to make a good multicultural immigration policy to practice the immigration human rights.
In sum, it is clear that we have to build a multicultural immigration policy when there are more and more people migrate to Taiwan . By this way, Taiwan will be a lovely paradise for all kinds of ethnic immigrants.
